As we move into the year 2021 I am going to begin blogging more and writing about my podcast episodes. I hope the additional writing will be beneficial for current listeners as well as those who stumble upon these articles via the world wide web.
Well, what a wild ride 2020 was! Even though there was much to complain about, I used this podcast episode to talk about some good things that happened in the past year, what I learned, and how we all should strive to better ourselves and our businesses in the year 2021.

Let’s get into what I learned

Lesson 1: I niched down to providing only podcast production services
Before narrowing my focus solely on podcasting I was a one-stop audio engineer. I was soliciting my services as a music recording engineer, a mixing engineer, a mastering engineer, a boom operator, a sound mixer, a re-recording mixing, etc.! I thought this was the perfect plan to bring in numerous clients, but I was still struggling to find clients, and after listening to the Six Figure Home Studio Podcast, I came to the conclusion that I needed to niche down to a single industry. This was probably one of the most difficult decisions I had to make in my business. It took a great deal of brainstorming and soul searching, but it was this decision that helped me to double my income in 2020!
Additionally, this allowed me to dig deep into the podcasting industry and learn everything there is to know about it. I have definitely just scratched the surface, but the more I learn, the more I can share with others.
Lesson 2: I started to invest in my education
I bought books. I started this year by reading The E-Myth Revisited by Michael Gerber, and this book taught me how to start thinking like a small business owner and how to plan for a successful business. This really started me on my journey as a solo entrepreneur.
Here is the list of books I read this past year. I started many more, but these were very influential:

  • The E-Myth Revisited by Michael Gerber
  • The 4-Hour Work Week by Timothy Ferris
  • Built to Sell by John Warrillow
  • The Automatic Customer by John Warrillow
  • Getting Work Right by Michael Naughton
  • The Go-Giver by Bob Burg and John David Mann
  • Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki
  • The 10x Rule by Grant Cardone
  • The Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey
  • How to Win Friends & Influence People by Dale Carnegie

I hired a business coach. This was a big leap of faith for me because I reached out to the co-host from the Six Figure Home Studio Podcast, Chris Graham, to mentor me as my business coach. He graciously accepted my application and has been a fountain of knowledge and questions to really challenge me and my thinking and to help me grow my business. Important note, if you are looking for a mentor or coach, make sure they are trying to build you up and not their own personal business. I am forever grateful for Chris and his selfless giving and advice.
I purchased an online course. After listening to The Graham Cochrane Show Podcast, a master educator and salesman, I was sold on purchasing his online course about creating online courses. The idea of creating my own online podcast production course had been percolating in my head for quite a while, and I discovered his podcast about online businesses at the right time in my life. I can’t wait to create my first mini-course.
Lesson 3: I stopped following all-knowing and all-powerful business and life “gurus”
This was very important for me. I was getting sucked into the philosophy of many business gurus who were promising riches and success beyond all my dreams and desires by acting in ways that did not bring peace and joy into my life. Martha, my wife, was noticing that I never seemed at peace and I was always hustling to get to my next activity. I failed to be present in the moment. I was too focused on the future. Letting go and unsubscribing from these guru’s email lists and Facebook groups have been a great blessing for me. I am still working on living in the moment, but this was the step in the right direction.
Lesson 4: I learned more short cuts and how to quickly edit and produce podcasts
Even though I have been producing 15-20 podcasts a week for the past 6 years and I thought I knew all the tricks and techniques about podcast editing, I knew there must be more to learn, so I dedicated time to learn how I can be even more efficient in my podcast editing and production skills. I certainly did learn I was missing out on a number of things! For example, Kyle Whittaker, from Christ Graham Coaching, introduced me to the program Keyboard Maestro, and I have learned so many shortcuts and techniques to greatly increase my podcast editing time. I will be making YouTube videos in the near future showcasing the new techniques I use to speed up podcast editing and production.
Bonus Lesson: I joined a mastermind group of other podcast business owners, and we meet weekly to discuss our business goals and to keep each other accountable. It has been an amazing experience to be able to bounce ideas off of like-minded individuals. I suggest you join one or create your own!

Let’s look into NCC Audio and podcasting in 2021

I have three main goals for the year 2021

  1. Increase Valuable Content
  2. Better Serve Current and New Clients
  3. Develop Digital Products

Content

Whether it is growing an audience, being a better host, or tricks and tips on editing and production techniques, I will be creating content showing you everything I have learned and all the new things that I am learning! My goal in 2021 is to provide valuable content that will help you with your podcasting goals.

Clients

I am always here to help you with your podcasting goals. If you need advice or instruction on how to record, edit, or publish a podcast, I am here. If you only need podcast editing help, I am here. If you need someone to take on your entire podcast production from launch to weekly maintenance, I am here.
I also find myself beginning to specialize in helping individuals and businesses who have a service or product they need to sell and helping them to grow an audience to achieve their goals; however, I am also here for those of you who need a podcast platform to proclaim a message or who have a strong desire to entertain others with stories and humor.

Digital Products

Not everyone is looking for a dedicated podcast producer and editor, but they still want to start their own podcast, so I am looking into building an online course that will guide you step by step into producing a podcast. From launching to publishing, I will explain it all.
My first mini-course will be more on the technical side on how to actually launch a podcast with topics such as:

  • Equipment and Recording
  • Editing and Production
  • Hosting and Publishing
  • Distribution on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, iHeart Radio, etc.

I am an audio engineer and musician by trade, so I am able to show you how to use a digital audio workstation and common audio tools such as compressors, limiters, equalizers, and noise-reduction tools. And of course, mixing and mastering techniques so you can easily produce your podcast and make it sound great!
In the future, I will create a full-fledged podcasting course that will also dive into the best techniques and practices for podcast launching, advertising, monetizing, hosting, and practices for building your audience and gaining listeners.
I have learned so much in the past few years and I cannot wait to share it with you!

What would you like to know?

What additional material would you like to see in this course? I am open to all thoughts and ideas. I am here to serve you and make sure you have a successful podcast that can grow an audience and achieve your goals, and remember, with an audience, all things are possible! This is the year to start your podcast and grow your audience. Let’s get started today!
